Büyükada, in Istanbul’s Princes’ Islands, is a day-trip destination reached by sea. You can plan around a ferry from a city pier, then spend your island time walking, cycling or using electric public transport.

  • Getting there: Büyükada is served by the Şehir Hatları Kabataş–Adalar route.
  • Route stops: The route also serves Bostancı, Heybeliada, Burgazada, Kınalıada, Kadıköy and Eminönü.
  • Getting around: Walking, cycling and electric public transport are options on the island.
  • Schedule: Sailing times and operating hours can vary with season, weather and service provider.
Choosing a ferry departure point

Choosing a ferry departure point

You can reach Büyükada only by sea, and several Istanbul terminals have ferry or passenger-sea-shuttle connections, depending on the season and operator. The Şehir Hatları Kabataş–Adalar route includes both Eminönü and Kadıköy among its stops, as well as Büyükada.

For an itinerary from the historic peninsula, Eminönü is a relevant terminal to consider; Kadıköy is another stop on that same route.

The island transport guide also names Kabataş, Beşiktaş, Bostancı and Maltepe as departure points, but service availability varies. Choose a departure point based on the sailing that fits your day, rather than assuming every terminal has the same service.

The historic peninsula has plenty to fill a separate day: a one-day Sultanahmet walking route keeps those sights together.

Büyükada is a distinct ferry outing from time around Istanbul’s historic center.

A Spice Bazaar visit is another way to plan time in Istanbul.

How do you check ferry routes and sailing times?

How do you check ferry routes and sailing times?

Check the Şehir Hatları Kabataş–Adalar route page for its timetable and pier information. The timetable is arranged around departures from Bostancı, with scheduled times shown for Büyükada and the other stops; it has separate tables for weekdays and Saturdays, and for Sundays and public holidays.

The timetable’s first Büyükada time is 05:45 on weekdays and Saturdays, and 06:15 on Sundays and public holidays. The final Büyükada time is 21:45 for both schedule types. These are timetable entries, not a guarantee that every sailing will operate as shown: schedules and service hours may change with season, weather conditions and provider.

Before setting out, check the official site before you go: use Şehir Hatları for its route timetable and downloadable PDF, and confirm the relevant departure pier. That check matters when coordinating the crossing with your return plans.

A relaxed day plan on Büyükada

A relaxed day plan on Büyükada

Start by arriving at Büyükada’s waterfront, then decide how much of the island you want to cover on foot, by bicycle or by electric public transport. The available transport choices make it possible to keep your plans flexible without building the day around a car.

For a slower outing, take a walk and spend time around the waterfront and town center. If you want to cover more ground, cycling is another way to get around; bicycles can be rented in the town center. Electric buses offer a further option, with routes connecting the center to other parts of the island.

Build your day around the return sailing you intend to take, leaving room to get back to the pier. Büyükada is especially busy on weekends, public holidays and during summer, so consider that pattern when choosing when to travel.

Getting around the island and respecting local rules

Getting around the island and respecting local rules

Walking, cycling and electric public transport are the main ways to get around Büyükada. Motor-vehicle traffic is highly restricted, and petrol- and diesel-powered vehicles are prohibited; plan your visit around the island’s permitted transport rather than expecting to use a private car.

IETT operates electric buses on three named routes: BA-1 runs between Center, Tepekoy and Kadiyoran; BA-2 connects Center and Maden; and BA-3 is the Grand Tour. Istanbulkart can be used to pay their fares. For current island transport details, check İETT’s “Büyükada Ulaşım Hatları” information and the Adalar District Governorate’s transport page.

If you prefer to explore at your own pace, walking and a town-center bicycle rental are alternatives to the buses. Keep the ferry back in mind when choosing how far to go, especially on a day when sailing conditions or service schedules may change.

Returning to the historic peninsula

Plan your return around a sailing that serves your chosen Istanbul terminal. The Kabataş–Adalar route includes Eminönü and Kadıköy, but the timetable’s departure pattern and stop times matter: check the current schedule for the direction and pier you need rather than relying only on the first or last Büyükada time.

Keep your day’s final plans simple enough to leave time to reach the pier and board the ferry.
